Northampton, MA 3/10/2010 – Hours after the announcement that the Supreme Court would hear a free speech case that could decide whether the notorious anti-gay protesting of the “God Hates Fags” Westboro Baptist Church is protected by free speech laws, the vocal leader Shirley Phelps-Roper appeared on Midweek Politics with David Pakman, lambasting the Supreme Court as “gay enablers,” adding that the Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader-Ginsburg seems “almost senile,” but is “not at all” worried that two Jews, a group much maligned by the church, sit on the high court. The interview is available online at www.davidpakman.com
In an exclusive interview with David Pakman of the nationally syndicated radio and television program Midweek Politics, Phelps-Roper said the court should tell the plaintiff to “drink a frosty mug of shut the hell up.” After the interview, Pakman added “When a church’s slogan is ‘God Hates Fags,’ you always expect insanity, but today even surprised me.” Phelps-Roper went on to refer to Barack Obama as “the beast” the put Justice Sonya Sotomayor on the court.
Westboro, known for their “God Hates Fags” slogan, makes a habit of protesting at the funerals of soldiers, regardless their sexuality, using the events to bring publicity to their campaign against gays. In a previous interview with Pakman, currently the youngest national talk radio host in the country, Shirley Phelps-Roper, daughter of Fred Phelps, made clear that her gripes are not only with gays, with extend to Jews as well. A “Jews are going to hell” tirade, directed in part against Pakman, who is Jewish, made her disdain for the group that Phelps-Roper claimed “killed her God” clear to the entire audience. In this most recent interview, when discussing whether it was worse to be Jewish or homosexual, Phelps-Roper said she “hopes the Jew is a fag.”
“We know in advance that anytime we have Shirley on, it will be controversial,” says Midweek Politics producer Louis Motamedi. “We booked her for this interview weeks ago, and it worked out that the Supreme Court news broke just before our interview.”
