David, I enjoy your show … but will admit am not a member. I was particularly interested in Ana Kasparian’s segment about Huffman Middle School in Alabama. Normally YT takes time to look at serious objections to their position before dismissing criticism. But Ms. K’s outrage at Huffman Middle School seemed quite lopsided. I don’t have access to many peer reviewed journals on the subject of single-sex vs coeducational benefits but a quick google search revealed that even the APA (http://www.apa.org/monitor/2011/02/coed.aspx) and US DoE (http://www2.ed.gov/rschstat/eval/other/single-sex/single-sex.pdf) have good things to say about single sex education under some circumstances… albeit a very small number of US schools choose that road.

The ACLU complaint about this particular school is primarily about the fact that school officials do a poor job of articulating why they chose single-sex ed. To their detriment, the school cites a particularly questionable book that does indeed advocate for single-sex education based upon the very stereotypes that Ana mentions (and I think we would all agree are harmful). That book is apparently used as a training manual of sorts for the teaching staff.

That said, I would have expected Ms Kasparian to have acknowledged that not all advocates of single-sex education do so through the use of “psuedoscience”, and that there may indeed be good reasons for such a small school to choose that. I suspect that the fact that this is a school in Alabama (she failed to mention the same complaint filed in Idaho) is what interested her – knowing that many liberals have a disdain for much of the public policies found in the southeastern states.

I am not defending Huffman Middle School — that will be up to their attorneys — but I usually hear you being fair in your representation of such subjects (even when you disagree with your guests) and this time was disappointed.

but I’ll still keep listening and promoting your show to others
